BBVA Portugal API Access & Open Banking Data

Reading your BBVA (Portugal) account data no longer means chasing bank certificates or building a bespoke PSD2 integration. open-banking.io gives you a single, privacy-first path to your BBVA balances and transactions — and, when you want it, a clean developer interface on top. BBVA in Portugal carries the BIC BBVAPTPLXXX, and open-banking.io supports both business and personal account types.

Everything is zero-knowledge and certificate-free. Your account data is decrypted locally with an encryption key that only you hold; open-banking.io's servers store only your public key and never see your data in the clear.

How to connect BBVA

Connecting happens entirely in the open-banking.io dashboard — there is no API call, code, or key involved in this step.

  1. Sign up for open-banking.io and open the dashboard.
  2. Set your encryption passphrase. Your keys are generated on your own device, so the decryption key never leaves your control.
  3. In the dashboard, pick BBVA (Portugal) and choose your account type — business or personal.
  4. You're redirected to BBVA's own secure login to approve access under PSD2. You authenticate directly with the bank; open-banking.io never sees your credentials.
  5. Once approved, your accounts sync into your dashboard automatically.

Your consent with BBVA lasts up to 180 days, after which you simply re-approve on the bank's screen to keep the connection live.

Access your data

After your BBVA accounts are connected, reading them programmatically is an optional developer step. Open the Developers page, create an API key, and export a credentials.json — this bundles your API key together with your private decryption key.

With that in place you can use the CLI (openbanking accounts, openbanking transactions, openbanking sync), an SDK, or the REST API directly. Requests authenticate with the X-Api-Key header, and every response is decrypted locally with your own key. Note that the API key alone only returns ciphertext — without your private key, the data stays encrypted end to end. The CLI and SDK read and sync existing connections; they never create them.

All of this runs for around EUR 3/month, covering 2,600+ EU and UK banks.

FAQ

Do I need a bank certificate or a developer license?

No. open-banking.io is certificate-free. You approve access directly on BBVA's PSD2 consent screen — no eIDAS certificate or sponsor bank required.

Can open-banking.io read my BBVA transactions?

No. The service is zero-knowledge and holds only your public key. Your transactions are decrypted on your device with a private key only you possess.

How long does BBVA access stay active?

Up to 180 days per consent. When it expires, re-authorise on BBVA's own login screen from your dashboard.
