VR SüdBank API Access & Open Banking Integration

How to connect VR SüdBank

Connecting is done entirely inside the open-banking.io dashboard — there is no API call, code, or key involved in this step:

  1. Create your open-banking.io account and set your encryption passphrase (your private key stays on your device).
  2. In the dashboard, search for and select VR SüdBank, then choose the account type you need — personal or business.
  3. You're redirected to VR SüdBank's own secure login, where you approve access under PSD2 (SCA on the bank's side).
  4. Your selected accounts sync back into your dashboard, ready to view.

VR SüdBank (BIC GENODEF1LBB) grants consent for up to 180 days, after which you simply re-approve on the bank's screen to keep the connection live.

Access your data

Once a connection exists, developers can optionally read it programmatically. Open the Developers page, create an API key, and export a credentials.json bundle — this holds both the API key and your private decryption key. From there use the CLI (openbanking accounts, openbanking transactions, openbanking sync), an SDK, or the REST API. Requests authenticate with the X-Api-Key header, and every response is decrypted locally with your own key. An API key on its own only ever returns ciphertext.

All of this runs for around EUR 3/month, with no certificate or licence overhead.

Do I need an API key to connect VR SüdBank?

No. Connecting happens in the dashboard via VR SüdBank's own login. API keys are only for reading data afterwards.

Can open-banking.io see my VR SüdBank data?

No. It holds only your public key. Data is decrypted on your device, so the service never sees readable balances or transactions.

How long does access last?
